Let's face it. I will never be able to win a medal on the balance beam. When I watch this video and see the grace and balance she displays I am amazed. To do what she does she has to have incredible balance.
STABLE Recovery emphasizes balance in all parts of your life. You don't have to have perfect balance to reap the benefits of working to achieve balance in your life. The key is to not let any one part dominate and overpower any of all of the rest of life.
An example would be that someone might be so focused on staying away from alcohol that they are attending AA meetings daily or at least several times a week and meeting with their sponsor regularly in order to work on the 12 Steps. This is all good and the right thing to do, but, at the same time this person may be neglecting other parts of their life—relationships, work, health, etc. The problem with that is any of these could lead to relapse if neglected. So, the key is to pay attention to what is going on in all parts of your life. Attend the meetings you need to attend to stay sober. Meet with your sponsor. You definitely need to work on your steps. At the same time, put as much effort into relationships and health and all other parts of your life as you can. You will be better able to focus on maintaining your recovery if you are not arguing with your wife or husband every night.
To be STABLE in recovery doesn't have to be like walking on a tightrope.
Blessings till next time.
